GENERAL STRATEGIES AND CONTROL

The basic idea of the game follows: You have a combination
tank/mining cart. There are eight gems in a 12x9 maze, and you must
pick them all up, bring them to an L-shaped cutting room, and take them
out of the mine. You must avoid monsters floating around the maze as
well. You can shoot them, but after a certain number are shot, they are
only stunned by your hits.

In general, it's a good idea to remove at least two gems per sortie.
On later levels, you will risk losing the third, because the monsters
move a bit faster and take less time to recover from being stunned. If
you shoot one and move across, it'll grab the last one.

Except in extreme emergencies or safe levels where you're trying for a
huge bonus but don't want to carry around the gems(level 6, for example)
or when you bring back just one gem, you want to leave the cutting room
the same way you enter. This is done by pushing up and not down. If
you leave down, you'll need a gem to get access to the room, and your
trail will be that much longer as you try to exit. You cannot leave
down if there are no gems left. Again, it may be good to do if you are
bringing gems over the long haul, but otherwise it can only save a big
challenge for later.

If no gems are left, and you are still alive, you may exit to try
another level. Getting killed also sends you back to the mining shaft.

If you have a gem, there seems to be a delay before you shoot.

As you get to the higher levels, the monsters recover more quickly
from stuns. Within the levels, the more gems you've returned, the more
quickly monsters get stunned.

Tunnels take some time to appear from, so there is a random element
involved if bad guys are around the tunnel.

Of course, picking up two gems close to each other before cutting them
is better than wandering around a lot with them.

On the earlier levels, you can probably shoot your way out. It's
easier to time shooting along a corridor than out in the open. Shooting
is best preserved for the return journey and particularly for when you
just leave the cutting room.

Sometimes you won't hit a monster directly to the left of you. This
is a glitch I should forewarn you about.

You are faster than the monsters while not digging but just as fast
while digging.

POINT SCORING

You get 10 points for every square you cover before the monsters do,
which includes squares with gems on them. There is a total of 9*12=108
squares, minus (3+2) for the cutting room and monster pen. You also get
20 points the first time you enter the cutting room. Although there is
a maximum of 1050 points you can of course never get that much as the
monsters track over a lot of terrain first.

Points scored change every five levels. There are three categories of
points:
a: picking up diamonds, cutting them
  b: shooting bad guys
  c: returning diamonds

If you return all eight diamonds successfully, you get a bonus of 10*c
points. Returning the key nets as many points as returning a diamond.
Incidentally, you could get infinite points on any one level by taking
the key and letting monsters steal it(which replaces it,) but it would
get tedious even more quickly than usual.

The chart for returning a bunch of gems at once is below that,
although it may be inaccurate past level 10, as I haven't gotten
multiple gems often on levels 11-15 or beyond.

Note: 9 is included, because as there are only 8 gems on each level,
you can also bring back the key. Level 9 is the best place to try this
stunt. There are no keys on levels 1-5 so you can't try it there. I
imagine the other bonus points are in similar proportions as for levels
1-5 and 6-10.

BREAKDOWN BY LEVEL

TERMINOLOGY

A couple of words I use frequently in the walkthrough:

SANCTUM--part of a board you can only access by teleportal
  PEN--where the monsters start out

LEVELS 1-5

There are two monsters out on the screen, and seven are waiting "in
the pen." The last two monsters are invincible.
  Jellyfish=vulnerable, empty double-triangle things=invincible

Heh..."stay out" is a slightly different sentiment from the start of
Championship Lode Runner("Hello" is created with gold chests and "good"
pops up when you complete the level.")

This level does have certain challenges and is probably tougher than
levels two or three. However, as you are not really forced into this
one, it's not unfair to have a level one like this.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

The two gems in the northwest corner are the first ones to get. Then
the two others at the top. Then there are the next two lower, and then
the bottom two.

This is one level where it might be possible to string together eight
gems, if you shoot a lot. However, a more easy and pedestrian way is to
go down the second column and get the two gems, get them cut, and get
out, then do the same for the third column, then the U above the cutting
room, and then the gems above the monsters' zone. To avoid disasters
you may wish to dig out a lot of space immediately, and to be totally
sure, just shoot monsters as you're about to enter.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

Just run down a column, get two gems, cut them, then the next one, cut
them, and then into a U, then the other U.

ones home first.

This is a bit trickier. The gems are in some nooks and crannies. It
may be a good idea to pick one gem up, leave through the bottom, and get
the other one, if there are two too far away.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN: Get the four pairs as follows.

1) right, down, and right to get two gems.
2) to be extra careful you may want to leave a gem lying around--go to
the lower right, check the gem in, and then go to the very top.
3) pick up the gems to the right, one in the dead end and one on the
far right
4) pick up the two at the bottom

This looks daunting but is not too bad. The monsters are close to you
to start, but usually you will be able to shoot them if they trap you.
It's probably a good start to pick up the gem below the north
transporter. Then pick up the gem to the left of that and run for the
cutter.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) see above
2) the lower right
3) the two gems to the left of the cutting room
4) the two gems above the monsters' "pen."

Despite being the first level where you need to use the teleporter, this
one is actually rather easy, as monsters will not accost you while
you're in the "inner sanctum." I think you should be able to pull out
three at a time, since monsters do not back over each other and
frequently loop around just above the cutting chamber. Obviously you
can't get the far right gems right away, but the lower left one can be
the first. You may even be able to pick up all eight gems(exiting
below) and then shoot the monsters that circle above you. Then you can
make a break for it.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) Lower left and any of the five in the "box."
2) Pick off 2 of the five.
3) Pick off the other two.
4) Pick off the far right.

The gems are very disjointed here. Given that most of the gems are far
away from the cutting room, you may want to take them over one at a
time, leave at the bottom, and pick up another one. There is a clear
path "back home," so you may be able to return several from the cutting
room.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) The lower two--you may want to shoot bad guys here
2) The upper-right two
3) maybe do this in two parts; the one to the right of the cutting
room entrance and the one above and to the right
4) do this in two parts as well

This is another pretty easy one. You'll want to cut through a lot of
paths in case a monster comes at you. Once you do that, you can pick up
a bunch of gems at once. You can probably get all four top gems at
first. It's probably more prudent to pick up the bottom ones two at a
time.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

Pick up two from the top twice, then two from the bottom twice.

There's less of a pattern in this one. You will need to get the key as
well, and that is the first order of business. When you get it, go all
the way left, up, right, and down. Then you should leave upwards. This
is the first level with a key, and you will need to cut it to enter the
cutting room.

This level is a great opportunity to get all eight gems and the key back
at once. It is a bit tricky to get the gem near the top, but if you get
them one at a time and then bolt for the exit(make sure that the
monsters left are vulnerable) it's quite possible.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) get the key first, and put the gem to the left in the cutting room
and leave through the bottom.
2) You can probably get the three gems in the sanctum and leave quickly
since the way is unobstructed.
3) drop off the one gem above the sanctum, then get the one to the
right of the monsters' pen.
4) Find the final two, which are just above the key.

Fortunately, the cutting room is very close to the exit, and there are
some gems close by as well. You'll want to pick up the two very closest
ones(go down, then up and right, then go to the cutting room) and will
also need to recognize that the sanctum room is the first that the
monsters can access, although it is rather large. This is the second
level with a key.

Given the short distance between the cutting room and the exit, you can
reasonably try to bring back everything at once here, too. I'd advise
shooting the monsters before entering with the last gem, as otherwise
they circle around frequently, making it impossible to get out without
losing a gem.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) the ones just below and to the right of the entrance
2) swoop down for the key and the gem above it--make sure no monsters
are waiting in the 'pen! You can maybe combine 1 and 2, as you can wait
for the monster to circle past the cutting room if you're in it and he's
close
3) now you need to go after the gems and the three to the right may be
the best ones to go after
4) get the two final ones to the right of the monsters

LEVELS 11-15

There are three monsters out on the screen, and six are waiting "in
the pen." The last three monsters are invincible.
  Walking squares=vulnerable, empty double-triangle things=invincible

You can still shoot monsters with relative impunity if you work
quickly.

This is an annoying one! You will need to wait a bit as the monsters'
pen is to the right of you. Some may jump right out at you, but
fortunately you're safe until you move.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) pick up the two closest to the entrance, waiting for monsters to
evacuate
2) pick up the two below the cross carrying 4 gems
3) pick up two gems from the cross
4) pick up the other two

You'll need to wait a bit before moving, otherwise the monsters will be
hot on your tail. Once you do you can probably go through the left
spiral, go to the cutting room, and get out. There are so many
corridors there so you should be able to shoot your way out. A less
risky way is to go through the right spiral for your first sortie.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) pick up the gem in the right spiral and then the one above and to
the left of the cutting room
2) pick up the lower right and the gem to the left. You can risk
picking up another gem.
3) pick up the key and the remaining two in the spiral
4) pick up the two in the inner sanctum

This is the first level that is a real "doozy." You will almost
certainly have to take four trips here. It is tricky entering the
sanctum where you have the cutting room, as even timing your entrance is
tough. You'll need to perfect turning and shooting, and you'll need
four trips there and back. If there is one level where you can accept
losing gems, this is it.

RECOMMENDED ORDER: the two leftmost gems, the two to the left of the
monsters, the highest gem, and the one on the upper right of the
sanctum. Then, the last two, which are the toughest.

LEVELS 16-20

There are three monsters on the screen, four in the pen, and three
invincible if you shoot everyone. The vulnerable ones are stepping
squares, and the invulnerable are spinning triangles. You can still
carry three gems past a stunned monster, but things are getting tight,
and all levels are icky. If you have the patience, five trips will help
you big time to avoid "stupid" losses

WAIT before doing anything else. The monsters are more likely to go to
the left and be trapped. From there you can get the relatively easy two
gems above the monsters' zone. You can probably even bag the one to the
left, since the monsters will be out of commission for a while. To
enter the sanctum, just wait by the teleporter until the monsters chase
you over there. Then go in and wait at bends in corridors for the
monsters to come at you. Turn and fire.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) get the three on top
2) get the first gem to the right of the cutting room and the one in
the lower left
3) get the two gems one square below the monster room
4) get the final gem in the cul-de-sac

Again, waiting may sucker the monsters all over to the left hand side.
That will give you an easy start--you can probably pick up the three
gems and the key not in the sanctum--and you can probably leave safely
by going down and left and bolting up quickly. You have fewer turns
this way, and you have more time to fire at monsters coming at you.
From there you may catch a break if you can wait for all monsters to
transfer to the right. To do so run into the right-side wall just below
the teleporter. The monsters should migrate, and when enough do, jump
in the teleporter. Fire away if you must to give yourself carte blanche
and pick up all the gems; be sure to watch for regenerating monsters.
I've been able to pick up all five gems at once(remember to wait for the
all clear, although this is not bad, because there is just a corridor to
the other teleporter) but given the lack of zigzags in this level it's
tolerable to pick up a few at a time.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) pick up the three gems and the key
2) pick up the lower two gems
3) pick up the middle gem
4) pick up the top two gems

Oh goody, another of "those" levels where there's a small sanctum the
monsters have access to. Obviously you'll need to wait for the monsters
to clear out before entering the teleporter, but in the meantime it's
not too bad to pick up the gems, two at a time, and shoot a few monsters
if necessary to get out. Even the key is in a reasonable position.
Once the monsters are out of the lower left you may be able to pick up
all four gems but you want to get the lower right of these gems first
just in case, so if a monster goes in the pen you can ambush it as it
comes out. Given the relative proximity of most gems to the entrance(or
to the teleporter which is close to the entrance) this is not a bad
level.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) Pick up top two gems, exit through the bottom, and get the key
2) Pick up the two gems just above the sanctum
3) Clear out the right gems in the sanctum
4) Clear out the ones on the left side

If you can avoid the monsters or sucker them into going down long
corridors, this is not a bad level. The monsters that get stunned can
be especially benign here, as if you sucker them into a long corridor
and stun them you can pick up the gems behind the pen very easily, so
fire away here. If you stun the monsters you should have carte blanche
to swoop past the three gems.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) pick up the lower left gem, go through the teleporter, pick up the
lower right
2) pick up the upper right gem and then the one below the cutting room
3) pick up one of the three adjacent gems and the one below that

Remember to WAIT before going forward. Once you do(move back and forth
a bit if necessary) the level is again not too bad. When you go into
the key spiral try to make it so you don't have to turn quickly and fire
at a triangle. This can get tricky(you may need to backtrack) if there
is more than one, so it is best not to carry gems when you are going
after the key. Fortunately one gem, which you may wish to drop off and
then pick up another one, is given to you.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) go to the cutting room, exit below, get the gem in the spiral and
enter the cutting room
2) get the two gems on the bottom, exit below, and get the key
3) make sure the sanctum is cleared out and swoop for the top two
gems(this way you can shoot and stun monsters the next time through,)
all four if no monsters are around,
4) get the other two gems

This one is actually rather nice, and you can take several gems out at
once. One of the big keys is, if you're in the lower right, to fire at
monsters going right at the top. There is a bit of a loop with long
corridors, which allows you to outsmart the bad guys.

You want to get the key first, and the inner sanctum is easier to
navigate. There are still long corridors that will allow you to pass by
monsters.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) get key and the gems adjacent to the cutting room. Monsters may
follow you, but once they go by the cutting room there's time to get out
and sneak past them.

Here, you need to avoid getting the gems in the spiral all at once, or
you'll get some nicked when you try to stun and pass a monster. It's
critical to pick up and return the leftmost gems one at a time. The
teleporters seem particularly useless. The spiral is not too bad to
navigate if you remember to shoot the monsters as you are on the up/down
parts of it when you confront the monsters.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) the two leftmost gems can be turned into the cutting room
2) the gem to the right of the monsters and the one above the cutting
room
3) the lower right gem and the first gem in the spiral
4) the final two gems in the spiral

LEVELS 31-35

Four monsters, which look like hat racks, are out there and
invincible--five are in the pen. Thorny gyroscopes are vulnerable.
Although the password for this is "FUN" quite frankly at this point
things ge a lot less fun and too much of a waiting game. You only get
one kill at this point.

Get the key first. There will be monsters stuck in the spiral, but you
may want to distract them by sitting just left of the transporter and
making a run for it. Basically you need to move up and then down in the
corridor just around it.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) get the key(even if you lose a life you will have opened the
teleporters,) leave down. Then pick off the adjacent gem and the gem in
the dead end to the right.
2) pick up the two gems adjacent to each other
3) pick up the gems on the right, but leave to the bottom after the
first one
4) get the two gems in the sanctum

With all the short walls in here, it's tough to get a bearing.
Fortunately there are many pairs of gems adjacent here, and most are to
the left, even if there's no easy way to get and return any easy one.
Again, safety may force you to return one at a time. You may wish to
stay on the bottom and then rush to the top to fake out monsters, and
there will be a lot of quick turning and firing.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) the near gem and the one to the left of the cutting room
2) get the key and return it. Then get the two on the right
3) get the keys in the lower left
4) get the keys in the sanctum

This level is a bit more tolerable. The cutting room is very close to
the exit although there is still the risk of running into a monster, so
you should still take only two gems at once. Eventually you'll need to
pick off the key right next to the monsters' pit, but the first two
gems, the ones on top, are the best to get to the cutting room and
return.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) the top two gems
2) two of the three remaining ones--pick up the gems
3) to the right of the transporter
4) the other two in the sanctum

More bark than bite in my opinion. Remember not to get greedy going
through the spiral. However, there are a lot of corridors and you may
need to wait for a monster to pass down before leaving to sneak past.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) pick up the gem to the right of the pen and go through the zigzag to
the cutting room. The top right gem is the toughest to get, and you
want to get it first.
2) pick up the first in the spiral and the gem below the cutting room
3) get the first two gems in the spiral
4) get the other two

Interestingly, the keys aren't needed here, and the monster pen isn't
really a factor. Long corridors allow you to blast monsters. You could
say that the last two levels are a bit of a letdown but for the fact
that 5x+1 through 5x+5 are not really sorted by difficulty. They aren't
really the last two.

RECOMMENDED PATTERN:

1) the leftmost gems
2) the uppermost gems
3) the lower right gems
4) the two gems in the zigzag

BEYOND

Level 36 is like level 1, except there are more bad guys wandering
around. The levels would appear to cycle with no real end. However,
you get the same points for level 36 as for 31-35.

PASSWORDS(LAST RESORT)

For levels 6-10 it is RKS. (Rocks?)
For levels 11-15 it is QEZ.
For levels 16-20 it is GEM. (Gem, obviously.)
For levels 21-25 it is WTH.
For levels 26-30 it is EME. (Emerald?)
For levels 31-35 it is FUN. (Heh.)
If you get through levels 31-35, you get the password "fun" again with
the message "You are on your way." Hmm. To the "asylum?"
